And so it begins!

I am so excited to be writing this post! I didn't expect to be writing this so soon, but we have started homeschooling already!

I feel like I've been "homeschooling" Evy since she was born. We really try to do things with her that are educational, and I'm always singing with her about her letters, numbers, etc. However, we've never done anything formal up to this point. I didn't want to push anything too early, and I was waiting for her lead. The other day, I was at a store and spotted some vintage-inspired alphabet flashcards. They were just my style! I had a hunch Evy would like them, and I brought them home. She ADORES THESE CARDS.

We went through each card and I would say "A is for apple. A - A- A - Apple!" (Making the letter sound as I said each word.) She asked me to go through the cards three more times! Later in the day, she came up to me and said "Work on my letters, Mommy?" and she's asked me everyday since to work on her letters. I knew it was time to begin a few structured homeschooling lessons!

Evy is excited to be showing Daddy her flashcards, and is wearing Little Friend Ellie's headband.

I looked into several packaged curriculum options, but they were either too simple or too advanced for where she is. Then I remembered in all my past researching the site 1+1+1 = 1 and how there are free printables and a MULTITUDE of ideas. There's a special section for preschoolers called "Tot School," and I knew it would be perfect. Sure enough, it was exactly what we're needing!

After browsing the site, I knew it would be very beneficial to invest in a laminating machine. This is especially nice because if Evy uses dry erase markers on the sheets, I can wipe it off and it's resuable! I went to Staples and ended up getting the Staples brand Multiuse Laminator.

I compared a lot of things, and even though it's $100, the "curriculum" I'm using is free, so it evens out. Plus, the laminator will last many years and I'll use it for countless things. After trying it out when I got home, I love it! Did you know it's possible to get addicted to laminating? I want to laminate my cell phone. Seriously, it's amazing.

I decided to go the simple route and go through the alphabet, doing a few activities with each letter. I found several great letter Aa printables at Tot School, and started with those. We have a laser jet printer that doesn't print in color, so unfortunately I don't have super cute and bright activity sheets. We'll invest in one in the future, but for right now I dont think Evy cares too much that the apples aren't red! I also printed several Aa activities from Confessions of a Homeschooler. Since Evy is obsessed with American flags right now, I printed out a cute flag coloring sheet from this website.

This is Evy's very first "homeschooling" activity sheet. She colored and traced the letter Aa and we were able to reuse it thanks to laminating!

I also went to a teacher supply store to see what they had. Here's what I ended up getting:

Tomorrow I'm going to go to Hobby Lobby and get a few basic supplies so I can do some Tot Trays with Evy. In essence, it's the Montessori method of putting out activities to catch your child's interest. I'm personally not going the tray route right now. I'm going to just introduce activities to Evy and go through them a few at a time. I'm going to buy things like pom poms, beads, tongs for sorting things, and other things for motor skill activities. I'm also buying "dot paints" so she can do dots on the letter shapes as we learn them.

I'm so excited to start this journey! We're taking things slowly and we'll just go letter by letter for awhile. I'm so excited that Evy is asking to learn and work on her numbers and letters. It makes me so thankful that I won't miss any of these moments!

  1. I use the dot markers from the Dollar Tree - they are way cheaper than the other brands. They are really bingo markers but work well for our kiddos. I am interested to see what you do. It looks like you are off to a great start. I have some things that I can email you if you are interested. One of my friends created a list of fabulous links and some ideas for all of us in our MOMS group. It has helped me tremendously! I love Tot School though and think it is an incredible resource. We do not do the trays either. Way too much work for this Mama right now.

  2. I'm so excited that you started this blog! We are considering homeschooling as well and my oldest is just a tad older than Evy. I love the Tot School blog. I have found so many great ideas on there. Brady (my oldest) goes to a Mom's Day Out program at our church 2 days/week. He will start that back up again next week, so I am planning on trying to be more intentional with "school" activities beginning then. Actually just today I received a book I had ordered from Amazon called Slow & Steady Get Me Ready by June Oberlander and it has a specific age appropriate activity for each week of a child's life from birth - 5 years of age. There are tons of great ideas in it. I read Susan Wise Bauer's book - The Well Trained Mind, and she highly recommended it for a "preschool" curriculum. I'm going to start using it tomorrow with both Brady and our 5 month old. Good luck to you. I can't wait to hear more about how things are going!

  3. I'm so happy for you guys. You might also want to check out ABC Jesus Loves Me. You can see how we are using it with Jonah: www.babyg8runiversity.blogspot.com . I LOVE 1+1+1=1 and Confessions of a Homeschooler but I noticed that when I was just focusing on letters, I was leaving out things like: Bible, Bible verses, Math (shapes, colors, patterns, position words and numbers), books of the week, working on spelling and writing the first name, fine and gross motor. Seriously she has it ALL in there planned out for me and it is FREE! She even has a 2 year-old and 4 year-old free curriculum. It looks like Evy is already a star student ;-)

  4. I had a thought when reading your post... maybe since your printer doesn't print in color you could print using pictures with white space in them (like the outline of an apple instead of a solid black apple) and Evy could color them in herself! You could ask her what color is an apple and then she is learning the words, pictures, and colors too but also having fun by coloring at the same time! Good luck with homeschooling, I think that is a great idea!

  5. Look at the Sonlight web site and just pick out books that you can get from the library to read to her- their booklist is very good. Also, if you keep an eye out at Ross or Marshall's, they oftentimes have games from the The Learning Journey that are only $5. My oldest (a girl) was also very interested in learning early on- she is my most verbal child to this day; my son- smart as a whip- has been a totally different ball game! And that is one of the beauties of home schooling! :)

  6. I think this is fabulous! I love that you are teaching her at such a young age. She seems like such a happy little girl and I bet it's because of the way you treat her.

Just seeing how you take care of her blesses me. I was home schooled all my life and I loved it, I hope to do the same with my(future) kids!

  9. Hey girl I was singing ABC's with Kelcee since she was born and we had cutesy flash cards kinda like the ones you bought and Kelcee loved to use them. She would always ask. By two she knew all her ABC's and all of the pictures like car, apple, etc. Then by two in a half she recognized her letters, last year we started with her sounds and she is now starting to read a little and she can recognize all her letters spell her name count to ten frontwards and backwards and write her name and some other words...we never pushed her we just played school and she loved it. I pretty much got the stuff like you did and just made it fun. How fun you are doing it! If I was well I would homeschool Kelcee but with all this chemo/ivig it isn't an option at the moment so we are blessed to put her in a private pre-school and she starts in September. Evy is so cute and looks so excited to start....
